Padlocks

Why buy a Padlock?

Buying a Padlock is a confusing area if you are not aware of the various grades and styles available. Whether you are simply replacing an existing padlock or fitting one from new it is worth considering, when buying a padlock the level of security you need and also the style of padlock.

A high security closed shackle padlock is suitable for an area that is easily accessible by the public, while a simple open shackle padlock for basic or internal security may suffice. Closed shackle padlocks can be considerably more expensive than basic brass open shackle padlocks but withstand attack for far longer periods, as an example they are used on a lot of residential rear doors or commercial properties access gates or security grills.

We always recommend the higest grade of padlock that your budget can afford to our customers especially if the lock is protecting an external area, as they may need to be approved by your insurers and for your own peace of mind. If you are looking for an internal padlock then a standard medium security padlock would be suitable to slow potential thieves down.

Many applications suit having two or more padlocks keyed alike for convenience or supplied as part of a master keying application. Other varions include high security padlocks within a restricted key section to prevent unauthorized key duplication.

Restricted Section Padlocks

Restricted key section padlocks are the best method of controlling key allocation and give higher confidence when several people are key holders. Duplication of keys for these locks is highly controlled and only provided with written authority from the authorized person or primary key holder. This can save considerable cost and concern when personnel leave providing keys are returned.

The padlocks supplied within the restricted section are for high security systems, such as the Chubb M3 range or Abus padlocks. These padlocks have been rigorously tested for burglar resistance. They have protection against all common forms of attack including lock picking, force, drilling, manipulation and hacksaw. Some of the ranges can be keyed alike for convenience and safety in a fire. We stock padlocks made by the leading manufacturers, such as Chubb, Yale, Abus, Era, etc. We can also supply high security hasp & staples & Padbars balanced to the padlock required. Please call or email us to talk through your restricted key section padlock requirements

Security Ratings/Approvals - CEN, Sold Secure and Moto

CEN is the main European lock standardisation and approvals body. A higher CEN rating indicates a higher security lock: CEN 6 is the highest rating and CEN 1 is the lowest. Sold Secure is an independent British security testing and approvals organisation that awards Gold standard to the highest security products, with Silver and Bronze for lower grade products. The following table shows the ratings and approval information for Stronghold padlocks:

Padlocks by Manufacturer

We supply most top branded padlocks including naming a few… Abus, Chubb, Yale, Squire, Ingersoll, Zone, Oxford and Era

Abus Padlocks

From the flagship Granit 37 80 close shackle insurance padlock, featuring the high security ABUS Plus locking mechanism, to a small keyed or combination padlock to secure your luggage when on holiday, ABUS have the right security product for just about every application. The range includes a wide selection of keyed alike padlocks, which offer the convenience of 2 or more padlocks supplied that operate using just one key.

Chubb Padlocks

A range of padlocks is available to suit a wide variety of applications. The effectiveness of the padlock is not only dependent upon the sophistication of its locking mechanism but also upon the quality of its
padbar. It is not much use having the most robust padlock if the padbar to which it is shackled is easily levered or if the gatepost or door to which it is fixed is rotten or in need of repair and attention.

There are two basic designs of padlock, open shackle and close shackle. Open shackle padlocks are the more familiar design where the looped shackle is exposed. Close shackle padlocks have shackles which make them less vulnerable to a cutting or sawing attack.

PADBARS (Also called Hasps and Staples)

There are a number of different styles and designs in the Chubb padbar range which are suitable for a wide variety of applications.

Again it is important to emphasise that the
padbar is attached to a mounting point in excellent condition and that they are securely fixed. If possible select a padbar offering concealed fixings or recessed bolts as these give added protection against forced attack.
